      John Albert Holmes, Jr.

      John Albert Holmes Jr. () was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, on January 6, to John Holmes, Sr., an engineer, and Mary (Murdock) Holmes. After attending Somerville public schools, John Holmes entered Tufts College in the fall of John Cousens, president of Tufts University, heard Holmes read the class poem at his high school graduation, and, impressed with the young poet, took Holmes under his wing during Holmes' student years at Tufts. Holmes received his Bachelor's degree in and throughout the following year attended graduate courses at Harvard while serving as an assistant in English at Tufts.

      Holmes began his teaching career at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he served as an Instructor of English during the years He later returned to Somerville and Tufts, joining the faculty of the Department of English as an Instructor in At Tufts, he advanced through the ranks of assistant and associate to a full professorship in He was honored with an honorary doctorate by the University in

      John Holmes (January 6, &#; June 22, ), born John Albert Holmes Jr., was a poet and critic.[1][2][3] He was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, and both attended and taught at Tufts University where he was a professor of literature and modern poetry for 28 years. He wrote several volumes of poetry and the lyrics to several Unitarian Universalist hymns.,[4] including "The People's Peace". He taught John Ciardi and Anne Sexton.

      Holmes was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, son of John A. Holmes, Sr. and Mary Florence (Murdock) Holmes. His father was an engineer who specialized in building dams and bridges. John attended Somerville public schools.[1]

      Professional life

      In he became an instructor at Tufts. He worked there the rest of his life, rising to full professor in Holmes's students admired him. "When he taught," wrote Jerome Barron, "something magical happened. He made you want to write and understand poetry. He didn't lecture; he encouraged. Simplicity, and writing that went from the inside out, this is what he was after."
