    The youngest of three children, Veronica Roth was born in New York but was raised primarily in Barrington, Illinois after her parents divorced when she was five. Upon graduating from Barrington High School, she enrolled in Carleton College in Minnesota. After one year at Carleton, she transferred to Northwestern University in Illinois and graduated with a degree in creative writing. Divergent was her debut novel, written during winter break of her senior year at Northwestern and published in 2011. Divergent is the first book in an acclaimed Young Adult series, followed by sequels Insurgent (2012) and Allegiant (2013).

    The Divergent trilogy earned Roth the Goodreads 2011 Choice Award, as well as the title of Best of 2012 in the category of Young Adult Fantasy & Science Fiction. She was also named Best Goodreads Author in 2012. The Divergent series was also nominated for a Kids' Choice Award in the Favorite Book category in 2015.

    In late 2013 it was announced Roth will publish a collection of four short stories from the point of view of Tobias Eaton, a major character in Divergent. These short stories can be found in Roth's book titled Four: A Divergent Story Collection.
