When President Obama initiated a new era of entente between America and the Cuban regime, it fostered an intense growth spurt that included a proliferation of air-conditioned hotels, Williamsburg-cool cafes and restaurants, holiday apartments that entrepreneurial Cubans were legally allowed to rent out, and crowds of tourists such as I could never have imagined in the heart of old Havana in the dour late 80s. An opportunity to revisit the island with the endlessly intriguing designers Threeasfour (“artists that express ourselves with clothes,” in the words of Gabi Asfour) and some of their community of art-and-music collaborators and friends—and on the eve of an historic election, no less—proved irresistible.
On day one I raced to the Cuban Art Building of the Bellas Artes Museum to see how the Threeasfour fittings were going—very well, as it happens—on a bevy of Cuban beauties.
