Growing up in deep rural Limpopo, where opportunities are rare, can be challenging and a dream killer.
But these circumstances did not deter South Africa’s award-winning storyteller Phathutshedzo Makwarela.
Makwarela grew up in Mamvuka village in Limpopo where his storytelling journey began.
Speaking on POWER Lunch on Friday, the multi-award winning storyteller shares his journey on how he got into the television industry.
“I was obsessed with radio dramas,” says Makwarela.
He adds: “Remember, we didn’t have electricity so the only way you could listen to those stories is through the car battery.”
The 34-year-old says the stories that used to play on radio and television inspired him a lot and made him join the industry as a storyteller.
He says he discovered his obsession for storytelling when he went to a technical high school in Lebowakgomo where he assumes his father probably wanted him to be an engineer.
“That’s when I realised that that wasn’t my path. In [Lebowakgomo] access to information was more expended and that’s when I discovered actually I can go study film making.”
After discovering his passion, Makwarela did not look back. He studied film making at the Tshwane University of Technology in Tshwane.
