On October 7, 2000, Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg stepped down following 36 years as ruler of the diminutive duchy, and was succeeded by his son Henri. When the Crown Prince was sworn in he became the sixth grand duke since the modern monarchy was installed in 1890. Grand Duke Jean's departure was intended, in part, to mark the new millennium, and draw attention to the issues the small, but economically savvy, country would face in the coming years. And his son's strong sense of history and national identity means Henri has maintained the legacy he inherited while bringing the duchy into the 21st century.

Grand Duke Henri's early and personal life

Born on April 16, 1955, at the Chateau de Betzdorf in Luxembourg, Henri attended secondary school in the duchy before heading to France to complete his baccalaureate. He'd later study in the US, the UK and Switzerland, graduating from the University of Geneva in 1980 with a degree in political science. While there he met vivacious, Cuban-born Maria Teresa Mestre, whom he went on to marry on February 14, 1981. Henri Albért Gabriel Félix Marie Guillaume, HRH Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg was the oldest son of HRH Grand Duke Jean, who led Luxembourg from 1964-2000, and was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1946-98. Upon his resignation HRH Grand Duke Henri was named to the IOC. Within the IOC he has served on the Olympic Solidarity Commission since 1999.

HRH Grand Duke Henri studied in Luxembourg and in France, obtaining a baccalaureate in 1974. He then underwent military officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, England before studying political science at the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International Studies, graduating in 1980. He later received a doctorate in economics from Khon Kaen University in Thailand.

Upon his father’s abdication, HRH Grand Duke Henri became Luxembourg head of state on 7 October 2000. The role is primarily representative, but he does appoint the prime minister, may dissolve the Chamber of Deputies, and can promulgate laws and accredit ambassadors.
