A bio is a written statement describing your skills, experiences, and credentials as a musician.

Written in a biographical style (hence the name), a bio highlights your notable musical activities and achievements: degrees and education, awards and grants you've won, music festivals you've attended, teaching, writing, and performance experience, publications, premieres, and more.

Your professional bio may also include your mission statement (why you do what you do) and some of your story (how you got here).

Every musician should have a professional bio.

It's considered a piece of marketing or promotional material. You may be asked to share your professional bio in concert programs, for residencies and workshops, when presenting at a conference, or when publishing a blog post, being interviewed on a podcast, or writing an article for a professional journal.

You should also include your bio on your website (we'll talk more about this at the end of this post).

Your musician bio communicates who you are and what you do; shares your credibility, qualifications, and expertise; and illuminates who you are as a musician, teacher, and/or performer.

Writing a Bio for a Precollege Classical Musician

One of the very first assignments given to CMPI Fellows is to write a bio about themselves. For Fellows who have never written a bio, it can be a daunting task, especially knowing what to include and what to leave out. Younger Fellows with less experience may feel like they do not even have enough information to craft a full bio, while older musicians may have too much! In this article, we will provide some general information on how to compose an appropriate classical music bio that can be used for applications, competitions, and programs.

Length of Bio

The length of the bio will vary based on the purpose of it. Students are commonly asked for bios that are , , or words in length, although occasionally bios can be as long as words. It is generally advisable to write a longer bio that you can then cut down into a shorter one. Most musicians have both a long and short version of their bio.

The following are items that are typically included in a bio for a precollege classical musician:
