To begin with, I heard of Sarala Mahabharata as a youngster; when my mother mentioned the phrase “Ganga kahile thibi, Gaangi kahile jibi” in a conversation. I asked what it meant and she proceeded to tell me the story of Ganga. I said, “What Mahabharata?” I had never heard of this version of the story. The story was distinctly different from Vyasa’s Mahabharata, the Sanskrit epic that we normally grew up reading. She said it was from the Odia language epic known as the Sarala Mahabharata. It was also a time when B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat (), televised for the first time was making waves. And that was that. I forgot about it.
Many years later, I read an article on Sarala Das and it all came back to me and I wanted to read the Odia Mahabharat. Not being fluent in reading Odia, I searched for an English translation. I couldn't find any. I was told by book sellers and publishers that there wasn’t any translation. So, I got hold of an Odia publication and with my father’s help, started reading and translating it for my own understanding. To cut a long story short, my forays into understanding it threw up more questions and put me on the path to researching and writing about the Sarala Mahabharata.

Sarala Das, the epic poet from Odisha who wrote his version of Odia Mahabharata, Vilanka Ramayana and Chandi Purana was born in the 15th century during the time of the powerful Ganga Dynasty during the Golden age of Odisha.
